Cecilia Vicuña

"The world of nature all over the planet is suffering because we are murdering it” - Cecilia Vicuña is a mixed-media, ecofeminist artist working primarily in installations and writing. She explores visuals from indigenous cultures through a feminist perspective where art is a ritual for healing broken connections. A notable ecofeminist piece she created is the installation Quipu Womb (The Story of the Red Thread, Athens) in 2017: a large red installation of red knotted strands. The overall symbolism of this piece is meant to showcase the interconnectedness of life, fertility, and ancestral memory, blending Andean quipu traditions with Greek mythology to highlight the enduring feminine principle and critique destructive forces like ecological disaster and colonization. Overall, Vicuña’s works are the intersection where different medias collide to enhance the impact of her pieces.
