Zadie Xa

Zadie Xa is a Korean-Canadian multidisciplinary artist whose practice portrays intricate mythologies combining personal ancestry, Korean shamanism, and science fiction. Her work, often created in collaboration with Benito Mayor Vallejo, uses immersive installations showcasing hand-crafted textiles, costumes, and sculptures activated by performative rituals. Furthermore, Xa uses water and marine ecologies as tools for communication of investigating the undiscovered whilst also relating to the abstract ideas of homeland. Furthermore, her elevation of traditionally feminized crafts like quilting and embroidery, alongside her attribution of pre-patriarchal spiritual traditions, serves to revalue forms of knowledge and labor systematically marginalized by patriarchal and colonial systems.
